Following in the footsteps of Porsche, GM is allegedly working on its own innovative 7 speed manual gearbox. Citing “trusted sources” that spoke with Inside Line, the first model to receive the new transmission will be the forthcoming Chevrolet Corvette.

While test mules slowly emerge from Michigan, they eliminate rumours of a mid-engine layout because C7 mules have been spied with the classic front-engine, rear-wheel-drive set-up. Forward-momentum will come from a new entry-level 440bhp (446PS/328kW) 5.5 litre V8 petrol engine.

The early test-beds also hint that the C7 will be shorter than the C6, with rear wheels moved forward, shortening the wheelbase. Speculation also suggests that a split rear window will be available as an option, giving homage to the 1963 model.

Sales will start in late 2013.
