Daihatsu has launched a new variant of the Mira keijidōsha (kei) car, called e:S. It features either new or revised technologies to improve fuel economy and lower emissions.

The brand said it has inspected every part of the body, engine, and transmission to maximise efficiency and according to Daihatsu, results in 40% more fuel economy that other city-car with engine displacements of 660cc/0.6 litres.

Motivation comes from a 3-cylinder, 650cc petrol engine that kicks out a mere 51bhp (52PS/38kW) and 60Nm (44lb-ft) of torque. Mated to a CVT, the Mira e:S should deliver urban fuel economy figures of 30km/l (85mpg UK/3.3l/100km) on the Japanese JC08 Mode test cycle, and an extra-urban figure of 32km/l (90mpg UK/3.1l/100km) on Japan’s 10-15 Mode test cycle.

With the car on sale now, prices start from under ¥800,000 (£6,750/€7,740).
