BMW has decided to axe its first-ever hybrid, the X6 ActiveHybrid, from the U.S market. Arriving in Winter 2009, the firm cites the X6 ActiveHybrid’s high sticker price and poor fuel economy as the reason for slow sales.

The hybrid crossover/SUV was conceived through an alliance with Chrysler, Daimler, and General Motors. Strangely, BMW has no intention of updating the vehicle’s nickel-metal hydride hybrid system with the marque’s latest lithium-ion battery packs.

While BMW drops one hybrid offering, another will be offered. According to a spokesman, BMW will sell the 5-Series hybrid in the U.S, using its own lithium-ion-based hybrid system.
